The small Sicilian mountain village Mineo is host to the ‘Centro di Accoglienza per Richiedenti Asilo’ (CARA) - a centre for reception of asylum seekers. Refugees who arrive in Italy by boat are transferred to resi- dences inside the CARA, in order to wait for the validation of their asylum applications. With more than 3,200 migrants from Eritrea, Sudan, Nigeria, Gambia, Liberia, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan and elsewhere living in the centre, the CARA Mineo is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
